this is my finnished results from my 'postcards' project.
the brief was to come up with 6 designs as an advertising compain for an art supplies company; each piece ha dto be strong on its own, but also work in a seiries; each piece had to be made using a different medium; there were 5 mediums we had to use and then one of our own choice - the mediums were -
Watercolour
Acrylic
Oil Paint
Colour Pencils
Pastels (either soft[chalk] or oil)
the medium i chose was Paper, specificly Handmade papers.

the final pieces had to be the same dimensions as an A6 postcard; they could be larger - but had to be in the same proportions so they could be scaled down easily. the majority of my final pieces were A3 size.

My first ideas was to use some imagery from make up advertising for each of the mediums - eg: pencils= khol, pastels = eyeshaddow, oils = foundation etc...
i discarded the ides after i came back from japan, and instead decided to use differnt parts of the costume of Maiko (trainee Geiko [Geisha]) girls as each of the postcards.

the parts of the over all costume i decided to 'zoom in on' were:
Hairstyle / nape of neck
Facial make-up
the Kimono
The Obi
The ceremonial dance fan
the high- soled shoes - Okobo.

the final pieces:

Neck/ Hair : Acrylics on MDF

Obi : Watercolour paints on water board

Kimono : colour pencils on Mount board

Fan : paper pices, combined in Photoshop.

Face : Oil Paints on MDF

Okobo (6" platform shoes) : Soft (chalk) Pastels on specialist Paper.

Basicly i liked the way that all the pieces came put, particually the acrylic and watercolour pieces. i had some problems with the Fan and Kimono Pieces, the Fan becuase i had to the the Photoshop work on the evil Macs at uni therfore not my best job, and the kimono, because i found that my colour pencils are water soluble, and i managed to smudge a large section of the background (you can see where i fixed it in photoshop :( ). given the time, i think i would like to rework those ones, just to fix the pronlems i had.

thankee for the lovely comments so far, MichaelPanda; no the Obi is all hand painted, the Kimono and Obi are based on my own Kimono and Obi i bought while in Japan ^^ .

i thought i'd post up a lil more of my work - nothing in particular, and in no order ^^

this is from my 'acrylics workshop' basicly i know how to use acrylic paints - so i spent a happy few hours chatting, then did this in the last hour or so, just to show willing -

i like this image for a few reasons; firstly i think the composition works quite well, also, (a few other people have also said this,) i like the juxtoposition (long word ^^) between the detail of teh maiko and the rough ness of the background.

this is a piece i did for composition theory; teh brief was to portray a small mouse about to be eaten bu a BIG rat; the original thumbnail 'skech' i did is this :

apparently the composition was "a little to perfect", ie the composition was too comfortable for an uncomfortable situation (do you believe it?)

anyway, i had to play around with the composition to make it more tense.

the piece is acrylics and texture paste on mountboard. i love texture paste - with a 'dry brush' is gives teh impression or a really 'worked' piece, with mininmum effort; to illustrate:

this is, i think my largest pieve so far this year - it's just a little larger than A1 - it was basicly the work from our 'wax and oil pastel workshop', where for a day we were let loose with tissue paper (the base) , wax crayons and oil pastels and an iron :D
being teh poor student i am i had bought my wax crayons and pastels from teh pound store, and as is unfortunatly yrh case with art materials; money = value ; i found out quite soon into the class that my oil pastels contained more wax then my wax crayons did!
not that tha made much of a adiiference - i think it turned out quite well. i tend to think of this piece now as a warped self portrait, good luck trying to interpret that ^^.

this is a kinda personal image - it was part personal work, but spurred on by a project we had (unfortunatly never handed in)

the image is a re-hash of an image i drew a couple of years ago, when i was going through depression.

the original picture:

the image is titles "Angel, Falling" - the idea was originally to protray the feeling, the pain of falling further, in my case into depression, or into disspair. the wings of the angel are becoming blood; they are bleeding away.

im still not sure how to portray this.

the main reason i have not as yet finnished this piec is because as soon as i try to open the file, photoshop trhrows a hissy fit!

once i hace it all working, and finnished, i will be sure to post the final image!

just a quick composition of two (of 8) thumbnails i did for colour theory that i thiygh worked you quite nicely.
i think this'll do for now ^^

The Magician's Nephew

ok - so i promiced i'd post these up - here we go...

first - the brief.

the basic brief was that a audo books company was doing a CD of a 'classic' novel - we had a choice of novels to chose from (eg: war of the worlds, lotr, emily bronty etc..) or we could could choose our own - i opted to do "the Magician's Nephew" as it was coinciding with the release of teh lion teh witch and teh wardrobe at cinemas atm...

any way - using Adobe Illustrator - a graphics programme for those who dont know - we had to produce 4 images - one for teh fron cover of teh CD case, one for the back, one for the inside/ inlay and one for the CD

for teh image i chose to illustrate what i thought were key scenes in the story...

and so :

i will post the images as they are without, and then with text :)

first: the back cover :

this is where the children (polly and Digory) forst encounter Jadis - she was teh red queen then - rather than the White Witch.

to clarify - she is holding digory by the sholder and tilting his chin up to look at him
polly is, of course afraid.

next : the Inner image - the inlay

this is the scene where straberry, the horse becomes fledge, the pegasis (sp?)

the CD image - this image has no text - so i am providing a full image and a cropped image (what it will look like when it is on a CD)

this image is from teh scene where digory is sent to collect a silver apple to plant a tree that will protect narnia from jadis (cos that worked), and he is tempted by jadis...

Last, but not least, and finally finnished (it took way too long);

Front Cover:

this isnt so much an image taken directly from the book; i wanted to protray the wood in between worlds; it's supposed to be lush and green, so i chose to make it literally green ^^
the hand in the foreground is supposed to be Jadis'.
Im not so happy with how the text turned out on this image, but i didnt want to use colour in the text, as i thought it would somehow drown out the image...

anyway, overall, i'm happy with how this project turned out.

hope tutor likes it.... (i forgot his name again >.< )

nothing to really do with the actual idea of this blog, something i did in responce to the flooding of new orleans; its based on the idea that everyone there is now equal; rich, poor, black, white; all having to support each other to stay alive...
